Frequently Asked Questions
I cannot find videos, simulations and assessment items?
Siyavula is continuously searching for the best rich media content to be integrated into our Siyavula textbooks. The content needs to be relevant to the South African curriculum, openly licensed and of a high quality. Some content which we have previously thought to include has since been taken out of the textbooks due to their quality, context or copyright. As a result of this you may find some short-codes in your books lead you to an error message. Please be patient with us as we are looking for replacement material and have strong relationships with South African content providers who are creating rich media for our use.
I cannot play the simulations?
You will need to download Java, don't worry it is free and only take 3 minutes! Please go to the link: http://www.java.com/en/ and download from here. You will be asked to follow a few basic steps in order to install it. Java will not only help your Siyavula online reading experience but improve all rich media viewing on the internet.
I cannot play the rich media on my phone?
The rich media such as videos, simulations, powerpoint presentations will only display on your mobile phone if your phone supports this. Some phones can only support certain rich media i.e Simulations will most likely not work on any mobile phones but videos will work for most.
Images and equations not displaying well?
If you are getting an error message or your content and equations are not displaying properly, it may be because you are using Internet Explorer to browse the web. Now would be a good time to change browsers for an overall better internet experience. One of our favourites is Chrome which is free and you can download here: https://www.google.com/chrome. After downloading Chrome you can choose to set it as your default browser which will make your internet surfing faster and easier.
What is a short-code? How do I use it?
If you have the hard copy textbook you will see icons and short-codes throughout the books. The icons and short-codes indicate videos, exercise solutions and additional practice. When you enter the 4 digit code into the search box you will be redirected to the same point on the digital version of the textbook. Here you can view the relevant rich media or full worked solution to the exercises in the book.
Where are the answers?
Full worked solutions are continuously being added to the digital versions of the books. You can find the worked solutions by entering the relevant short-code into the search bar. If you are unable to find your specific worked solution it may be because it is still being added. Alternatively we have a Teacher’s Guide available for Grade 10, you can read this online or buy the hard copy from us. Here you will find all the worked solutions.
